Like most potters, I am in love with clay. I can lose hours at the wheel trying new forms, new clays, testing the limits of what I can do.
In this new series of work, I remain focused on the clay itself. From soft mud on the wheel, through trimming and adding handles once it’s firmed up, then decorating, first firing, glazing and second firing, the clay changes shape and color as it turns into a glazed rock. In this work, I blend different clays to show different color clays streaking through a background clay, the way igneous intrusions of molten rock fill seams in surrounding rock. I keep glazing to a minimum, to really let the clay show what it’s got, and picture of work in progress let you enjoy the early stages of the process that I love so much.
